Berkeley House

Wotton-under-Edge A 1763 survey shows that the house was then owned by Humphrey Mayo. Tombs show a goldsmith who died in 1740 aged thirty; and a daughter of the Wortley Family of Osborne 1674 - 1726.

An interesting feature in the house was bought by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1924. A room in this house was completely removed and erected in the museum.

The room dates from 1740-60 and was decorated in a combination of chinoiserie and rococo styles. The Panelling is of pine painted green Furnished above dado level with the oringinal set of paper hangings painted in the Chinese style with flowers, birds and trees. Painted in England to imitate imported Chinese wallpaper, bears the tax-stamp 'GR' used in the reign of George II (1729-60). The overmantel above the fireplace is decorated with applied carving of foliage and rococo ornament. It also has small Chinese porcelain ornaments.

An 18th Century brass and iron grate was recovered, but the Dutch tiles were not. The chimney piece and surround with applied plaster decoration are also recovered. This paper in fine condition the only other two examples are known to be at Painswich House and at Hardwick Court.

You can see four of the seven wallpaper panels from the room at the British Galleries.
