One of Gloucestershire's greatest Treasures!
Amy was one of the most fascinating, intriguing, humorous, knowledgeable,
determined, honest, hardworking, forthright and sometimes awkward people
we shall ever meet and she could curse and swear with the best of them.
Amy left school at the age of 14 and for a time worked at Abbey Mills
doing winding. She also was in service for a time at Newark House.
Amy enjoyed the out doors from a young age, she learnt her fathers trades
by following him on his day to day tasks. Skills were to include many,
thatching, hedging, and ditching.
In 1939 she worked for the council as a road sweeper for 27-28 years,
using a broom and shovel. She tended hedges with a hook scythe.
On Leaving the council Amy went on to work on the post round which still
kept her in the open air and her last job was a paper round which she
carried out with cheerful word for all.

To mark the first anniversary of Amy Cook's death, Christine Eccles produced
a book in tribute to her. This 'appreciation' was sold to fund an inscribed
memorial stone, chosen by Amy's son Raymond, which now stands in Wotton-under-Edge
Cemetery.

The Privvy
I'd like to go
down to the privy again
Down the winding garden path,
To sit again on that wooden seat without
the urgent need to rush.,
With the old door half way open and the sun a shining through.
Back to the days of my childhood When my world was green
and new.
But what's the use of wishing-
'Tis far too long ago and the old privvy has rotted away and the
buckets have
vanished too.
Now we're up to date and modern with a flush and sometimes
two,
I will still remember those happy days,
When my world was green and new.
