Kingswood Abbey Gate

1150 ~ After more than a decade of comings and goings the discontented monks of Tetbury have at last decided to settle down

They have gone back to Kingswood, near the town of Wotton-under-Edge, where a new Abbey has been built.

Not long after the founding in 1139 of the monastery at Kingswood, an offshoot Cistercian monastery was set up at Tetbury, at Estcourt Grange. The original monks came from a monastery in the diocese of Chartres in France.

During the recent civil war between Matilda and Stephen, the monks at Kingswood decided to remove to a quieter spot at Hazelton, close to Rodmarton.

After the war the land was returned to its owner Reginald de Valery, who promptly evicted the monks. They went back to Kingswood but didn't like the way they had been treated by Reginald and protested strongly.
