Edward Budding - 1832
Edward Budding - Invented the lawn mower

A Dursley man

Edward Budding, invented the lawn mower.
His patent, which he took out in 1832, was for a machine in which spiral cutting knives rotated against a horizontal fixed bottom blade. A heavy roller at the rear smoothed things down to give a nice neat lawn.

This example shows that the mower remained virtually unchanged until the comparatively recent introduction of 'Flymos' and rotary mowers.

Ransomes acquired a licence to manufacture in quantity.

Budding also invented several machines for George Lister
