Dursley appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Dersilege.
The Manor was held by the Berkeley family until 1382.
The original Manor House was built about 1153 from the local Tolfe (or puff)
stone, but by 1540 it had been taken down and the stone used elsewhere.
The town was one of the five ancient Boroughs of Gloucestershire, its original Wealth and standing being derived from the Cotswolds wool and clothing trade.
In the 17th Century it was described as being a good clothing and market town governed by Bailiff and four Constables.
